Even though we often take a hot shower or bath for granted, hot water accounts for up to 20% of a household’s annual energy expenditure. As a result, it is the second largest utility expense in the home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, with an average cost of $400 to $600 per year. Therefore, the type, size, and efficiency of the water heater you choose will significantly impact its performance and long-term cost savings.
From the types of water heaters to the efficiency and size you need, Astar has covered you with all the information you need to choose the perfect water heater for your home.
The different types of Water heaters:
- Tank Water Heaters: Conventional storage water heaters are heaters that utilize a tank to store the heated water for use. These heaters come in two options, gas & electric. Gas heaters cost more upfront but lower monthly costs, while electric heaters cost less upfront but typically higher monthly costs due to the increased use of electricity. Overall, conventional storage water heaters generally have a lower purchase price but require higher utility costs and ongoing maintenance and tend to be bulky in size.
- Tankless Water Heaters: With Tankless water heaters, water is heated directly without using a storage tank. This type of water heater supplies enough hot water without running out when properly sized.
Fuel Types:
Fuel type is another factor you should consider when deciding what water heater to purchase for your home.
- Electric waters heaters are pretty simple to install and do not require specific ventilation; however, electric water heaters do require more energy which leads to a higher utility bill.
- Natural Gas water heaters produce hot water fairly quickly and are available in various sizes and models. These type of water heaters do require ventilation through a chimney or wall.
- Liquid propane water heaters also require a ventilation system like natural gas water heaters, as well as a storage tank to store heated water.
Water Heater sizing:
When choosing the type and size of a water heater, consider the amount of water used, the number of people living in the home, and the available space. If you have a household with minimal extra space, I suggest a tank-less water heater. For tank water heaters, start at 23 gallons and add 10 more gallons per additional person in the house to estimate the size tank you will need. For example, a 46 – 56 gallon tank would be sufficient for household with 3 to 5 people.
